Shiatsu reveals we are not deterministic, we are capable and in constant change.

We are shaped and we shape back

The body is part of the self. The body is relational. We are shaped and we shape back. Shiatsu reveals we are not deterministic we are capable and in constant change.

Paloma is a New Yorker, in Arnhem bringing together a career in agroecology to her shiatsu practice. Working as a farmer provided her with a unique perspective from which to view and understand the connections between the histories of being displaced from land to similar histories of being disconnected to the body rooted in the modern, colonial paradigm.

Check out Paloma’s classes and schedule (lesrooster) — you are welcome at Yogahouse in Arnhem.

Paloma sees the body as a site of cultural conditioning but also a site of possible liberation. Therefore her bodywork is political, trauma informed, and offers a gesture to collective liberation.  For her, shiatsu has been a tool to weave herself back into sensations with her body.

By developing a deeper connection to sensations in our body, to make contact with these sensations such as numbness or tension- allows oneself to trust themself and move more compassionately with themself.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a form of bodywork administered by thumbs, fingers, palms, elbows, and knees. Sustained supportive pressure, manipulation, and stretching are applied along specific pathways (meridians). These are essentially the same meridians that are used in traditional Chinese medicine for acupuncture.

Through setsu-shin (touch based diagnosis) shiatsu therapy can help determine the conditions of the ki the meridian- therefore making diagnosis (using kyo/jitsu theory). Coupled with theoretical application of Chinese medical theory, shiatsu provides clear treatment addressing the ki in the body.

Zen Shiatsu

Within the field of Shiatsu itself, there are a few styles-Paloma’s lineage follows Zen Shiatsu; stylized roughly half a century ago in Japan by philosopher and doctor Shizuto Masunaga. Zen shiatsu combines elements of Shiatsu and the Taoist roots of Chinese medicine with Western psychology, physiology and philosophical thoughts of Zen Buddhism.

Clients can expect to lay on a futon (possible modifications if needed) fully clothed which allows the practitioner the ability to apply pressure using body weight. No massage oils or lotions are used or needed.
